Aluminum fluoride (AlF3) serves critical functions across diverse industries, anchored by its dominant role in aluminum production. As an essential additive in cryolite-based electrolytes, it optimizes bath chemistry for energy-efficient electrolytic smelting by lowering melting points and enhancing conductivity. Beyond metallurgy, AlF3 acts as a fluorinating agent in synthesizing fluorocarbons, refrigerants, and agrochemicals, while catalyzing petrochemical processes like alkylation.
In materials science, it modifies viscosity and optical properties in specialty glasses and ceramics, functioning as a flux for infrared optics and enamel coatings. The battery industry applies ultra-pure AlF3 coatings to lithium-ion cathodes to extend cycle life and improve thermal stability. Environmentally, it enables dry scrubbing systems that capture hydrogen fluoride emissions from smelters, converting pollutants into reusable bath material.
Aluminum fluoride (AlF3) is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula AlF3 and a molecular weight of 83.98 g/mol. It typically appears as a white, odorless crystalline solid. Anhydrous AlF3 exhibits a high melting point of approximately 1,291°C (2,356°F) and sublimates before melting. Its density ranges from 3.10-3.15 g/cm³.
Physically, it is non-hygroscopic and virtually insoluble in water, acids, and alkalis. Chemically, aluminum fluoride demonstrates high thermal stability and acts as a strong Lewis acid. It resists hydrolysis but reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid to release hydrogen fluoride.
