Potassium fluoborate (chemical formula: KBF4), also known as potassium boron fluoride and potassium tetrafluoroborate, is the potassium salt of fluoboric acid. Slightly soluble in water, solubility 4.4 g/L (20ºC), insoluble in cold ethanol and alkali solution, slightly soluble in hot ethanol.

Potassium fluoborate is white powder or gel crystal. Non-hygroscopic. Bitter taste. Potassium fluoroborate can be prepared by reacting hydrofluoric acid with boric acid and then neutralizing it with potassium hydroxide. Potassium fluoroborate can be used as a flux during welding.

Applications

1. Used as flux in welding and raw material for manufacturing other fluoride salts. It can also be used in electrochemical processes and reagents.
 
2. Used as a flux for hot welding and brazing, a raw material for producing boron-containing alloys by aluminum-magnesium casting, and a filler in heavy-duty grinding wheels using resin as abrasive binder. When welding and fusing silver, gold and stainless steel, it can remove the dross of light metals. It is the raw material for making boron trifluoride and other fluoride salts. Also used in electrochemical processes and reagents.

3. Potassium borofluoride is used in low chromic acid chromium plating and lead-tin alloy electrolytes. Industrial products contain 95% potassium borofluoride. The content of chloride and sulfate in industrial products used for chromium plating must be controlled.
